Matthew K in Kazakhstan - career path

Why did you decide to work in this country?
The opportunity arose to work for a UK Russell Group University that had been tasked to open a new Foundation and Engineering Faculty in a new university in Kazakhstan.
 
What was the career journey that took you there?
I began my career in South Korea in 2006 when I completed a TESOL Certificate from the University of California at a university in the south of the country.
 
How has your MA influenced your career path?
My MA has hopefully influenced my employability while at the same time giving me increased confidence in a university setting.

Could you tell us about the institution in which you work?
I currently work at an English medium university in Kazakhstan. The university has been open since 2010 and now consists of: Centre for Preparatory Studies (Foundation); School of Engineering; School of Science & Technology; School of Humanities and Social Science; Graduate School of Medicine; Graduate School of Education and a Graduate Business School. I believe in total there are approximately 3000 students.
 
Could you describe your teaching role in the department?
I am an EAP Teaching Fellow on the Foundation Programme. I am responsible for teaching EAP across all skills. Other duties include one-to-one tutorials for both academic and pastoral care and a personal development module that helps students transition into university life. Also, I am actively involved within the Technology Enhanced Learning team which includes giving both student and teacher development sessions on educational technology. Finally, I am also involved within the Academic Learning Centre providing ESP lessons on topics such as lab reports and academic posters.
