Students from The University of Nottingham’s UK, China and Malaysia campuses have come together in a week-long festival of sport at the fifth annual Tri Campus Games.
Unique in the Higher Education sector, the Games allow students to sample international sporting competition, while making contacts with peers from across the global and experiencing life at a different University campus.
Held this year at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC), the fifth annual Tri Campus Games saw over 200 students compete across 16 events under the banner ‘friendship through sport’.
While team UK again retained the Tri Campus Games Trophy, the competition was enjoyed by all those who took part. Looking back at the tournament, organiser Nigel Mayglothling was delighted by both the standard of sport on show and the hospitality the teams received at UNMC.
He said: “From the first evening we have seen fantastic team engagement, with "rivals" sharing meals and social time together throughout the event. The competition itself saw some outstanding individual and team performances.
“The warm welcome and organisation delivered by staff at the Malaysia Campus ensured that our talented athletes were able to excel, despite the soaring heat.”Friendly competition
While teams are keen to claim victory in their respective sports, the theme of the Games has never been far from the minds of any of the competitors, with Ultimate Frisbee player Sonny Lai, summing up the spirit of the Games, despite suffering a close defeat to Team UK.
He explained: “It was one of the toughest matches we have played. But this opportunity that the University has given us is amazing. We get to play with UK and Malaysia teams in these wonderful Games.
“The experience we have gained at the Tri Campus Games is excellent. Outside of the matches we have made friends among the other Ultimate Frisbee teams, going out to dinner and socialising with one another.”
