Entry requirements

Foundation courses

We offer foundation courses for students who are not qualified for direct undergraduate entry. These are not typically required for applicants from Canada.

Undergraduate courses

Full-time courses across our five faculties typically last for three to four years, although some degrees such as medicine and architecture have a longer duration.

Undergraduate entry requirements

Completion of Canadian Grade 12/13 (High School Diploma) is required for entry to our bachelors programmes. The below information outlines the minimum requirements for entry to our degree programmes but please note that requirements will vary depending on the course:

For Alberta, New Brunswick, New Foundland, North West Territories, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan, we require a General High School Diploma with 75-85% average across five subjects at Grade 12.

For British Colombia and Yukon, we require a Senior Secondary Graduation Diploma with 77-87% average across five Grade 12 subjects, including English 12.

For Manitoba, we require a High School Graduation Diploma with an overall average of 77–85% across five grade 12 academic subjects numbered 40/41/42 and at least 65% in each subject.

For Ontario, we require a Grade 12 Secondary School Diploma (advanced level) with 75–90% average across 6 Grade 12 U, U/C or M courses including Grade 12 U English.

For Quebec, we require a Diplôme d'Etudes Collègiales (DEC) with an overall average of between 75%-90%.

It is worth noting that Canadian students must have a minimum of 90% in Grade 12 biology and chemistry to be considered for entry to our undergraduate medicine programme.

Students taking A levels or the IB should refer to the online undergraduate prospectus for entry requirements.

Applicants who are a Canadian nationals and hold qualifications in English equivalent to GCSEs are not required to show any additional evidence of English language ability.

Masters courses

We offer a wide range of postgraduate degree programmes across our five faculties. Full-time masters courses typically last for one year.

Masters entry requirements

Masters applicants should hold a good bachelors degree from a recognised institution. Typical minimum requirements for students who have studied at Canadian universities are as follows:

  • A CGPA of 3.2 out of 4.0 or 6.5 out of 9.0, Grade B+ or 77% for programmes requiring a UK 2:1
  • A CGPA of 2.9 out of 4.0 or 5.5 out of 9.0, Grade B or 73% for programmes requiring a UK 2:2

Applicants who hold a qualification equivalent to a UK degree and studied it in English in Canada (at a recognised, non-bilingual institution) or applicants who are a Canadian nationals and hold qualifications in English equivalent to GCSEs are not required to show any additional evidence of English language ability.

Research courses

Our PhD courses, available across a wide range of subject areas, typically include three years of full-time research followed by an optional writing-up period of one year to complete your thesis.

PhD entry requirements

A masters degree from a recognised university is usually required for PhD entry.

Typical minimum CGPA requirements from Canadian universities are GPA 2.9 out of 4 or 5.5 out of 9.0.

For all research degrees, we recommend that you make initial enquiries with a potential supervisor or the relevant University of Nottingham school / department before applying.  A  research proposal is required when submitting your application.

Applicants who hold a qualification equivalent to a UK degree and studied it in English in Canada (at a recognised, non-bilingual institution) or applicants who are a Canadian nationals and hold qualifications in English equivalent to GCSEs are not required to show any additional evidence of English language ability.
